Maryport Arts and Heritage Partnership are delighted to announce the successful artists awarded MADE IN MARYPORT commissions, following the recent call out.
They are;
Hilary Whiteside-Swan
Hilary is an urban landscape artist based in Maryport. Her passion is painting local street scenes, landscapes, towns and villages in and around the North lakes area of Cumbria. Born in Moresby in Whitehaven, she graduated from Carlisle College, moved to London and then Kent for 33 years before returning home in 2018 to live in Maryport, which is the subject of many of her paintings.
Hillary’s submission concept is a montage made up of the social landscape, working life and industrial developments that helped to shape modern Maryport over the last 200 years, portrayed in one single landscape image. The projected painting features historical images of the iron works, shipbuilding, coal and the jam factory, with Christchurch being the pivotal feature. All these elements will be pulled together to form a montage inside a backdrop of the eternally spectacular Maryport sunset. The media is acrylic on large canvas or board.
Mark Metcalf
Mark is a photographer, illustrator and graphic designer based in Maryport.
His proposal is for a trio of digitally illustrated posters using his photography as reference, These will depict the following 3 subjects that all fall within the theme:
- The Cast Iron Light House
- The Harbour and the fishing boats
- The beach and the view across the Solway
Bethany Gray
Bethany is a Maryport based artist, muralist and face painter. She trained at the Cumbria Institute of Arts.
Bethany submission was to create a mural which starts with wings of waves representing the sea. Throughout the piece there will be nods to other parts of Maryport’s history, a boat for ship building, a Roman fort and other Roman artifacts with a backdrop of fells illustrating Maryport as a historic gateway to the Lake District.
Tom Kay
Tom is a photographer and videographer with over 20 years of experience based in Flimby.
Tom’s submission is a photographic study of the remnants of Maryport’s industrial heritage. By contacting local history groups and using my existing contacts to identify some of the lesser known, as well as some of the more obvious evidence of the area’s maritime, mining and other industrial history.
